Description
Amenii could not deny that accusation, she had been feeling the effects for the last four months, and they were only getting worse with time. Still she could not bring herself to look at the doctor before here.
Taking her silence as an admission of guilt he continued. ‘Your chest has inflated beyond what any bunny I can ever recall seeing, and your Belly! -It looks like a casual sneeze will cause you to rupture.’
‘I know bunnies love to multiply, but You, you, have taken this to a dangerous new level.’ His expression hardened. ‘What were you thinking when you decided to do this to yourself?’
It was all she could do to hold back her tears, the words hurt, and had cut her deep. He was the third one to give her the speech. Each in turn had stared at her with a mixture of horror and shock. The first hospital she had visited nearly whisked her away to the emergency room, thinking she was about to go into labor. Why should this one have been any different?
‘I’m going to be frank.’ The doctor continued, his tone softening, his outrage overcome with sympathy. ‘ If you let this pregnancy go on much longer it is very likely that both you and your…child, will die.’
Amenii’s hands moved from supporting her weight to clasp her swollen belly in a protective embrace, that did not please the doctor, who gave her a disproving glare.
‘Have you even considered what would happen to you if you fell, right, now?’ He added, looking at her perched at the edge of a chair far too big for her small body. ‘Did you honestly think you could carry this child to term?’
Yes. She wanted to say the word, but it lodged in her throat. Yes, I want to feel her growing within me, kicking, I want to be there when she comes into the world, not asleep in some operating table.
‘I had hoped that a responsible bunny, like you would know that cross breeding is very dangerous.’ Something must have shown in her face, as the doctor frowned in disproval. ‘That thing, growing in your belly – it may be the death of you, even if you survive child birth.’
‘Her.’ Amenii’s voice was a whisper.
‘Excuse me?’
‘Her.’ Amenii lifted her gaze, her hands rubbed her belly. ‘She’s a girl. And I am going to do what is best for her.’
Pushing herself off from the chair, she dropped to the floor, and nearly fell. The doctors hand snagged her shoulder at the last second though, pulling her back to her feet, his face a mask.
‘That’s what I am afraid of.’
